This initiative, funded by an expanded MOU, encompasses a diverse range of projects, from scripted drama to digital innovation, showcasing the BBC's dedication to nurturing local talent and fostering sustainable growth. The centerpiece of this initiative is the highly anticipated drama series, The Northumbria Mysteries, a significant return of BBC drama production to the North East. Set against the stunning backdrop of Northumberland, the series centers on an unlikely crime-solving duo, Joe Ruby and DI Rose O'Connell, played by Robson Green and an Oxford-educated actress yet to be announced. The pairing of a jack-of-all-trades and a deep thinker promises to create a captivating dynamic, as they unravel a series of compelling crime mysteries. Lonesome Pine Productions, based in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, is bringing this project to life, with Executive Producer Lesley Douglas expressing her enthusiasm for working with the BBC to realize these characters. The series, currently in pre-production, will begin filming in Northumberland this spring, with a focus on the region's picturesque landscapes. This commitment to the North East extends beyond drama, with the BBC also announcing a new adaptation of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾, filmed at The Northern Studios, Hartlepool, and on location in Hartlepool and Sunderland. The ten-part series, adapted by David Nicholls, Caitlin Moran, Caroline Moran, Dillon Mapletoft, and Oliver Taylor, will bring Sue Townsend's beloved book to life on screen. Additionally, the BBC's The One Show will feature three films made by two North East production companies, offering a platform for smaller companies to grow and showcase local talent. The initiative's crown jewel, however, is the Digital Accelerator, a bold partnership between the BBC and North East Screen. This initiative aims to unlock the digital potential of North East production companies, fostering innovation and growth in the region's creative economy. The four independent production companies selected for the Digital Accelerator are Adventure Alliance Films, Film Nova, Northern Child, and Wander Films, each receiving support from BBC and North East Screen teams to scale up and deliver high-impact, market-ready digital content. This commitment to the North East Creative Cluster is a testament to the BBC's strategic vision, aiming to revitalize the region's creative industry and position it as a hub for innovative and sustainable content creation.
